Rust was 81, and had experienced an extended illness prior to his
death. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Jane, their children: Ellen,
Linda and Roy Rust III; his grandchilden: Roy Rust IV, Abigail, Ivan,
Elizabeth, William, Tate, Caroline, Esther, Anne, Jonathan, Lydia,
Maria, Charles, Hannah; and one great-grandchild, Roy Rust V. Rust was
a good husband, father and grandfather. He strived to live what he
believed, and did a pretty good job of it.
"Without my Dad there wouldn't be Miniature Herefords", says Roy
Largent. "In 1973 when I lost half my herd, it was his encouragement
that made me continue. Without it, I might have given up on the idea."
Rust started the Miniature Hereford Club in 1994 and the same year
he began The Miniature Hereford Newsletter.
Rust was born on June 23, 1924 in Merkel, Texas, the son of Roy Rust
and Hazel Largent. He was raised a third generation registered Hereford
breeder on a ranch near Brownwood, Texas. He graduated from Brownwood
High School in 1941 and is a graduate of Kemper Military School in
Booneville, Missouri. He became a lieutenant in the army Air Corp and
served as a pilot flying B-17's and B-29's. When he came home from the
service, he went to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth for a year,
majoring in range animal science. He started to work for a ranch in New
Mexico where he met his wife, Evelyn Jane Lackey and they were married
in 1949. They moved to Alpine in 1956 and began their own ranch at that
time. He bought Point of Rocks Ranch in 1959 and developed a good
reputation as a registered Hereford breeder in West Texas. He was
active in local, state and national Hereford organizations up until 1970
when he started the Miniature Herefords with his son, Roy. Raising
cattle was his life and he was very good at it.
Rust 's wish was to be buried on the ranch beside Blue Mountain. A
simple graveside ceremony was held Christmas evening, and a memorial
service was held December 28 at the Methodist Church in Fort Davis,
Texas.
